Utah Contractor License Requirements

Contractor License UtahDivision of Occupational and Professional Licensing has contracted with PSI licensure to conduct exams to be certain that contractors meet local as well as national requirements. In order to qualify for a license, a contractor must meet the following:

  • Have a minimum of four years of full-time related experience within the past 10 years. Two of those four years must be in a supervisory or managerial position for applicants of General Engineering, General Building or Residential and Small Commercial classifications.
  • A minimum of four years of full-time related experience for applicants of either carpentry, general masonry, steel erection, heating ventilating and air conditioning, refrigeration or fire suppression within the past 10 years.
  • A minimum of two years of full-time related experience for applicants of all other contractor classifications not listed above, excluding electrical and plumbing.

The Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing will accept certain examinations as substitute if taken in Arizona, California, Louisiana, Nevada or South Carolina. Examinations given in any other state are not acceptable substitutes. If you were licensed in any of these states but did not take the trade classification exam, then you will be required to take the Utah trade classification exam. Electrical and plumbing contractor classifications are not listed and are required to take a different exam and apply for a different license. You must pass the required exam before applying for a license. To do so, you must either apply online, over the phone, via fax or standard mail with a fee of $72. Candidates must wait 30 days before retaking the exam if they did not pass and after 3 attempts, a candidate must wait 6 months before attempting the exam again. In order to pass the exam, your score, which will be received immediately after completion, must be at least 70%.
